Reentry Services

In Idaho, there are currently about 8,000 in the state prison system. Approximately 1,000 are released from prison annually into Ada County, and about 600 released into Canyon County. Of those released, recent statistics from the state show that the recidivism rate is about 35%.

St. Vincent de Paul Reentry Services is centered around assisting in a successful transition from incarceration back into society for returning citizens.

Recovery Coaching

We offer a progressive approach to support individuals who are working on their recovery from opioids, methamphetamine use and abuse of alcohol. This program is a partnership between St. Vincent de Paul Southwest Idaho and the Idaho department of Health and Welfare and Recovery Idaho.

It is unique in that it utilizes a recovery coach to walk the steps of an individual for a six-month process. The design is to supplement a person’s ongoing after care (if-applicable) and work with any existing treatment plans.

The recovery coach component can enhance chances for long term success by working on the day to day needs of someone transitioning into long term sobriety in the areas of support meeting demands of housing, emergency needs to sustain employment, connections to sober community situations, and roadblocks that develop.

Recovery coaches, are one form of peer support. They involve the process of giving and receiving non-clinical assistance to support long-term recovery from substance use disorders.

Our Reentry Services team is happy to help you get back on your feet. Come by the one of the SVdP Reentry Offices, we will help you.

Community Service

If you are currently looking for volunteer opportunities to fulfill Court-Ordered Community Service requirements, we welcome you to volunteer at one of our Thrift Store Locations! Click here to sign up for Community Service Volunteer Opportunities.

Please ensure you bring any/all paperwork and documentation that will need to be completed upon fulfilling Community Service Requirements.

Tasks vary, but it’s best to expect sorting through donations, including tagging and organizing items, helping with floor displays, and assisting with any cleaning needed.

Volunteers are required to wear appropriate casual attire appropriate for a work environment. A t-shirt, jeans, and baseball caps are all acceptable. We ask that you refrain from wearing anything that could be considered offensive in a work environment. Close-toed shoes are required (sneakers are ideal). If you have hair long enough to pull back, we ask that you have it pulled back.

Our thrift stores are very flexible in terms of the time volunteers can help out. We ask that you volunteer for a minimum of an hour.  You can create a schedule that works well for you. If you have any questions regarding scheduling, please contact the store manager.

Mark Renick

Reentry Program Manager

St. Vincent de Paul Southwest Idaho Reentry Services is passionate about building coalitions to support change for individuals released from incarceration and returning to communities in Idaho. I am Blessed to be a part of that effort. As Program Manager for Reentry Services, many life experiences have dominated my qualifications to direct these efforts. As a consumer of correctional services (ten years incarcerated since age 30), I tend to understand the population we serve. I am also in long-term recovery and, most importantly, very open about my Christian Faith. These aspects increase our successful support for this vital work.

I have been a St Vincent de Paul Reentry Conference member for over nine years. It has led to the creation of an advocacy group, Systemic Change of Idaho. This exciting project looks to change how Idahoans view returning citizens and educate them on the issues those returning from incarceration face in their daily lives. Under this banner, we do a weekly radio talk show about incarceration where all who serve this community are guests and resources. The show airs weekly on KBXL 94.1 FM every Saturday at 12:30 pm MST. We are also regular visitors on Salt and Light Radio, where we discuss life after incarceration.

James Hendrickson

Reentry Specialist

My name is James Hendrickson. I am retired and work at Saint Vincent de Paul in Boise as a Reentry Specialist. I have two adult daughters and three grandkids, two boys, 5 and 17, and a girl, 8. They are my life and what keeps me focused on making good choices. I hop on my Harley and ride into the sunset when the weather is pleasant. I also tend to think I can shoot par on the golf course. I try, but I know I’m facing an unrealistic challenge.

I pick up returning citizens from incarceration and provide them with all the services they may need to help them re-enter society and become productive citizens. I stress the importance of a support system and how vital it is for the support to help them refocus and to make good choices themselves. I have been incarcerated and know firsthand the anxiety and stress of re-entering society. Because of my experience, my ultimate goal is to help, guide, mentor, and assist anyone who struggles with the uncertainty of re-establishing back into society. I discuss with them the importance of a support system such as family and friends. If they lack a support system, I invite them to think of and use SVDP services as their support. All of my coworkers are passionate about helping people be their best version. One achievement of my life was overcoming a very trying, ignominious, and shameful time. It takes some effort to pursue a renewal of your mind. Giving back and helping returning citizens using my experience has done that and made me feel better in my skin than ever before. One quirky thing about me, and my coworkers will attest, is I get pretty emotional when I try to speak about the success someone has achieved or how happy they are. It is embarrassing; however, I am where The Lord wants me, and I’m ecstatic about that.

Reentry Career Development

Finding meaningful employment for returning citizens is challenging. Creating relationships with local businesses and entities is vital to successful reentry and long-term employment. As we work in the community, we have a greater understanding of the long-term negative impact of incarceration, not only on the individual and their family but also on our community as a whole.

We produce more effective solutions by focusing our assistance on the underserved population and returning citizens.
